Dragoncon 2003 Saturday

Last update: March 25, 2010

Thursday and Friday ~ Saturday ~ Sunday

Saturday morning I had a LOTR costuming panel and went as Galadriel. I didn't get any pictures of the Panel, but I do plan to have a run down of what went on in it. Everyone on the panel was incredible and I personally learned alot. Quimbie gave out great ideas of how to pick a costume, Maggie talked about picking patterns and altering them while Shawn made pattern drawing look like anyone could do it. And to close, Rebecca (also known as Neume) made us all laugh with her witty presentation on make up for elves.

After the panel, I caught up with Dan'a as Arwen and we walked around the con, finding the dealers rooms MUCH more crowded than the previous day.

Kev dressed as Obi-wan again and had quite a following with the young padawans

And again, we ran into Captain Jack Sparrow

I was surprised that he wore the costume again, but delighted, especially when he said he was Jack all weekend. But when I said I was going as Jackie Sparrow on Monday and would have to get a picture, he said, all weekend except Monday. I pleaded with him, and even tried to use my nenya ring to get him to change his mind about costuming on Monday... but alas, the pirate had a will of steel and refused the elfqueen. He was really nice about it though... Great guy.

So.... I figured I was wearing Galadriel again on Sunday night anyway, and changed out of Galadriel and into Jackie. Dan'a was kind enough to change back into her beautiful and very accurate Peach Dress and go as my Elizabeth too.

It took us a while to find him again... I suspected he was hiding from his over zealous fan... *heheh* but we caught up with the Captain and he didn't even run away... and we got the picture.

This encounter is memorialized on video tape and Jack, who's real name I learned is Wade, was at his best in character and really made us all laugh a lot.

DEEP MOMENT WARNING

I think one of the reasons I liked the POTC movie so much (besides it being so good) is that it came at a time when I really needed to forget the stress of life and just laugh and be swept away to a different time and place. So watching my favorite character come to life at the con, obviously had a strong impact... I think I better understand how costuming can really help people when we share it at charities and in hospitals. That feeling of leaving this world for a moment and interacting with a character we love can really make someone's outlook brighten.

BACK TO THE REVIEW

The day was long and we needed refreshments. I soon found being a pirate was a lot more relaxing than a proper elf queen.

After lunch we captured a rematch of Obi-wan and Jango with our friend Arturo. What I didn't get in pictures, I got on film... three padawan's who ran up and started beating on Arturo with their mother chasing them yelling that they shouldn't hurt him. Funny stuff.

While we were hanging out at the fan tables in walks SAURON!

Toby's costume is great... he even put the One Ring on his finger!
I talked to him a bit about it and found out that THIS was the guy who told Arturo about Gapoxio... who told me... which made my elf costume possible.

So I met my hero's hero.... and it was Sauron.

After that, we heard a familiar voice and looked to see that Jack had showed up again. Kev was so impressed that he decided that the compass he had spent the last month working on for MY costume, really belonged on this guys belt. So... we trekked on over to him and took a picture of the compus before we handed it over. Wade was very grateful and proceded to explain to us the details of what Compass prop Johnny wore, such as when it was the one that opened, and when it was just a solid piece. He really knew his stuff...

And of course, I had to get some more pictures with him.

Right after giving away the compass, we ran into another Jack Sparrow. I posed for a picture with him, but sort of felt like I was cheating or something...

That night we went out to dinner with some of the guys and gals from The Dented Helmet Forum. Then we headed back over to the Hyatt where I ran into Elrond... aka Got Maul/Jose. And he let me hold his shield...
